TCM Question #10

WHAT IS CUPPING?

“Acupuncture and cupping – more than half of the ills cured,” is a famous Chinese saying about Chinese Medicine and the practice of cupping.

The photos are very popular. You see them everywhere.  A person’s back with bright red rings that look like burn marks in the shape of circles running up and down the spine.  To an uninformed observer, it looks awful, but for the patient, the benefits can be enormous. Documents record this procedure being used, dating as far back as 300 A.D.

Cupping is a suction-type massage technique we often use in combination with acupuncture treatments . This therapy stimulates the flow of blood and vital energy also known as “Qi” or “chi”.  The suction promotes blood circulation in the area that’s treated.

Cupping should be done by a trained professional only.
